A contemporary Japanese interior on the grounds of a Shinto Shrine
Chalk Lane recently renovated an apartment within Akagi Shrine’s grounds in Tokyo, housed in a Kuma Kengo-designed building.
We blended traditional Japanese materials with contemporary Western design and embraced Wabi-Sabi, highlighting natural textures and imperfection. Shikkui plaster walls, oak wood flooring, and handcrafted washi paper create warmth, while sleek modern furnishings add balance. Shoji-style sliding doors enhance flow; a brass bathtub offers a serene retreat.
The result is a refined, tranquil space that honours Japanese tradition, harmonizes with modern living, and reflects the spiritual essence of Akagi Shrine.
